Please get your child’s vision checked.

I have two reasons for writing this letter.

First, I want to thank Dr. James E. Miller OD for all that he did for my granddaughter.

She was in the first grade and appeared to be experiencing considerable difficulty in learning to read. I felt that there was something involved other than simply her inability to learn. Aside from the natural grandparent pride that most grandparents exhibit, I had observed her in many phases and knew that she was intelligent enough to read much better than she demonstrated.

I spoke with Dr Miller about the problem and he felt that he could help. My daughter was a bit skeptical at first, but I found an article in the newspaper about the same or a similar problem. She gave the article to her daughter’s teacher, who had felt all along that there had been a visual problem involved. The teacher concurred with my opinion.

Finally, I persuaded both parents to at least schedule a consultation with Dr. Miller. They did and he immediately diagnosed the problem and advised them of a course of treatment. They decided to proceed with treatment that he prescribed. Within two months, an amazing transformation took place and my granddaughter began to read well. Soon she was reading beyond the level that was expected of her.

I suppose the most telling moment of all, for me, when we were in the children’s section of a book store and she started reading from a book that was a grade or two higher than her grade and reading it flawlessly. “Could you have read that before you started seeing Dr. Miller?” I asked. “No” was her short, simple reply.

My second reason for writing is to inform and encourage parents who have children, regardless of their grade or age, who are experiencing difficulty in reading.

If you are in that situation, AT LEAST talk with Dr. Miller about the problem. You will find him to be very courteous, receptive of your concerns and very willing to help your child. All he needs is a chance.

Your child’s life will be greatly enhanced and the child will experience an amazing transformation.
